(The Center Square) – A new report says drivers in Pennsylvania and its neighboring states pay the most tolls each year.

Using federal data, law firm Beck & Beck calculated the amount of tolls paid per 1,000 miles traveled and found that Delaware ($41.12), New Jersey ($26.92), New York ($22.10), Pennsylvania ($18.68) and Maryland ($17.71), were the top five highest out 27 states with paid public roads.

The firm calculated the figure by dividing 2023 federal data on total revenues for each state by total miles driven.

Pennsylvania’s toll revenues reached $1.87 billion that year, the fourth highest in the nation, with more than 100,126,000 miles driven.

It costs drivers $113 to cross Pennsylvania, although such trips represent less than 1% of those taken in the commonwealth. New York’s Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway is a distant second at $28, according to Fleetworthy.

Drivers with EZPass pay roughly half that amount. According to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, roughly 85% of drivers in 2025 used the pass. Tolls climbed on Jan. 1 by 4%, the smallest in more than a decade. Hikes of 3.5% and 3% are anticipated in 2027 and 2028, respectively.

Since 2007, turnpike tolls have funded $8 billion in state transportation projects.
