There is Nothing Existential About This Election

RSS Feed

Election Day is less than a week away.  Everybody is paying attention, which means the “messaging” is at peak volume and if it is to be believed the stakes of this election are nothing less than the survival of the United States of America.  What utter drivel.

First of all, this nation survived an actual Civil War.  If it survived that, it’ll survive an election. Spare me the rhetoric.

Yes, elections have consequences.  Yes, those consequences may change your life in some fashion.  But the only way that will be existential to even just you is if you fail to adapt.  And isn’t that the key to life – adapting to change?

Here’s what I know with certainty – short of nuclear annihilation this nation will not cease to exist in a moment or through a single event.  If it is to end, and everything ends at some point, it will, like the Roman Empire, erode and transmogrify slowly, almost unrecognizably.  The lives of its individual citizens largely unchanged, outside the normal vagaries of life, throughout their lifetimes.  Historians will argue for the rest of eternity about what was the moment that the decline irrevocably took hold, but those who live through it will not have a clue it is happening.

But there is also a beauty to the United States that The Roman Empire did not enjoy – the ability to, regularly and routinely, alter or affirm course.  That’s what an election is, an opportunity to affirm the course the nation is on or to alter it.  If you lose this election, you will have another opportunity in a couple of years.  The nation will not cease to exist in those two years.

Also remember, the course the nation is on is not about the personalities of those operating the ship.  Throughout history we have had lovely people and complete jerks in office – criminals and saint.  The nation has survived all of it.  Times are good and times are bad, but whatever they are, they will soon change – we just need to cope with it.

So set aside your anxiety and worry about this election.  Set aside your admiration or disgust about a specific candidate.  Remember, the course of the nation is much, much larger than your personal interests or concerns.  Study, learn and consider the big picture.  Do not vote your passion, vote your reason.

We’ll be fine, regardless of what happens Tuesday.

And now, the remainder of the pile:

Isn’t this true for a lot of things?

This story and this story are deeply related.  I leave it to you to figure out how.  (Hint: Follow-The-Money)

When her “execution” failed, someone should have taken out a gun and shot the Tennessee miscreant in the head, several times.  But as it is, I could care less than less that she is upset she’s not dead.  Other than her next scheduled execution, I would just as soon never hear about her again.

Read this and listen to the Host interviewing Dani Pletka this week.  Make no mistake, radical Islamic forces will stop at nothing to undermine our electoral process – nothing.

Martin Luther King is undoubtedly sitting with God in Heaven asking Him why it has all gone so wrong with racial matters.

Finally, California.  There has been much made this week of Gavin Newsom’s statements about socialism and the future.  It all springs from an undercover video.  It seems clear to me that Newsom was telling the interviewer what he thought they wanted to hear.  The man is without ideology and goes where the wind takes him.
